Serving as both first responders and community centers in times of disaster, fire stations in Puerto Rico needed a way to provide safe, reliable drinking water independent of infrastructure and bottled water distribution.
In 2017, Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico leaving 50% of the island without access to potable water. With grocery stores sold out of bottled water and roads too destroyed for regular water distribution, families and communities across the island had no drinking water.
Fire stations across Puerto Rico partnered with Empowered by Light, GivePower, and SunRun Solar to bring electricity and water to remote communities. As part of this project, SOURCE Hydropanels were deployed and installed at fire stations throughout Puerto Rico, restoring access to drinking water while ensuring access in the face of any future disaster.
