years cultivating coffee
walked for water
For more than 150 years, East Timor has cultivated some of the world’s finest coffee. But these arid highlands are feeling the burden of climate change and finding drinking water now means a two hour walk down the mountain, and back up again, and then boiling the water to make it safe.
As part of its global commitment to coffee growers, Starbucks has installed 30 SOURCE Hydropanels in the village of Duhoho. Even in this dry climate, this water farm is creating clean, safe, drinking water where it’s needed, rather than miles away. For the people of Duhoho, have ended the walk for drinking water.
“We no longer have to fetch water from the spring, boil it and go searching for firewood. We can drink directly from the tap, so this reduces my burden greatly”
Mana Dina, Duhoho resident and business owner
